Former US President Donald Trump asked a federal judge in Florida on Friday to reinstate his account from Twitter, which the company removed in January citing the risk of inciting violence.

Trump filed a request for a preliminary injunction against Twitter in the US District Court for the Southern District of Florida, arguing that the social media company was “forced” by members of the US Congress to suspend his account Was.


Twitter and several other social media platforms banned Trump from his services after a mob of his supporters attacked the US Capitol in a deadly riot on January 6.

That attack followed a speech by Trump in which he repeated false claims that his election loss in November was due to widespread fraud, a claim rejected by many courts and state election officials.

Trump’s lawyers said in the filing, “Twitter exercises power and control over political discourse in this country to a degree that is immeasurable, historically unprecedented and dangerous to open democratic debate.” The filing was first reported by Bloomberg.

Twitter declined to comment on the filing when contacted by Reuters.

Before being blocked, Trump had over 88 million followers on Twitter and used it as his social media megaphone.

In a court filing, Trump argued that Twitter allowed the Taliban to regularly tweet about their military victories in Afghanistan, but by labeling their tweets as “misleading information” during his presidency. Or indicating that they violated company rules against “glorifying violence.”

In July Trump sued Twitter, Facebook Inc and Alphabet Inc’s Google as well as their CEOs, alleging they unlawfully silence conservative viewpoints.
