Royal life is not for everyone. This became apparent when Meghan Markle stepped down from her role within the monarchy less than two years after marrying Prince Harry. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex reveal their truth about life behind the palace walls in a shocking interview. But Harry’s wife isn’t the first woman to have a hard time adjusting to the demands of royal life. Years ago, Harry’s mother, Princess Diana, talked about some of the pressures of being at the firm.
Here’s what the late Princess of Wales compared to being a member of the royal family.
Diana said being a royal was like living every day
Andrew Morton and his explosives in a secretly recorded audiotape panorama In the interview, the world learned that Princess Diana didn’t have the best experience as a member of the royal family.
The princess was really skeptical about joining The Firm early on and even tried to back down from their marriage. In an audio recording for a documentary Diana: In Her Own Words, the princess is heard telling her sisters that she does not know if she can marry Prince Charles. She did, of course, but Diana described the day as “the worst day of my life” after she tied the knot.
According to the book’s author, Brian Kozlowski long live the Queen! 13 rules for living by Britain’s longest-reigning monarchy, Princess Diana was open about the stresses of life as a royal and was far more perfect than what she felt. “[Royal life] bit, as Princess Diana would later describe, always having to be on time for the wedding ‘every day of her life—as the bride’,” Kozlowski wrote (per Marie Claire)

Another royal who elaborated a side of being royal that doesn’t match the fairy tale, with many believing it to be Diana’s former sister-in-law.
In 1996, Prince Andrew’s ex-wife, Sarah Ferguson, appeared on Oprah Winfrey talk show And revealed what it’s like to be married to a member of Britain’s most famous family: “It’s fairy tale, but then comes the realism that you didn’t actually marry a fairy tale, you married a man. You fell in love and you married a man and then you have to understand fairy tales. Now it’s not a fairy tale. It’s real life out there.”
In her stellar interview with Oprah, Princess Diana’s daughter-in-law also spoke about being a member of the firm. Meghan shared that she had to give up her passport, her driver’s license and her keys when she married Prince Harry. The Duchess of Sussex also said the royal tour was “exhausting”.
“They are tour – I bet they have beautiful pictures and it looks vibrant, and that’s all true,” Meghan said, before adding, “It’s also really exhausting. So, I was fried, And I think it hit me so hard because we were making it look like everything was fine. I can understand why people were really surprised to see that there was pain.”
