At the Toronto International Film Festival, the film’s directors Theodore Melfi and McCarthy reunited to talk about the film. in an interview with time limit, McCarthy reveals why he signed on for the film.
What Is McCarthy’s Role In ‘The Starling’?

Then comes, a particularly loud and uncontrollable bird that bangs its head with the lily. But as he helps her deal with the boisterous bird, she and Lily develop an unlikely friendship, helping each other deal with their past.
There is no doubt that McCarthy’s Lily is going through a complex grieving process that has had an impact on her marriage as well. As a wife, she supports her husband and wants to prioritize his needs, sometimes at the expense of his own care.
McCarthy resonates with Lilly and Jack’s “emotional journey”
As an actor, McCarthy found the depth of her character and the trajectory of her relationship with her husband interesting. She found that their journey was emotionally exhausting but in the end, it was also hopeful.
McCarthy relates to the idea of ”coming back” for each other. After the loss, the way Lily and Jack found their way back to each other despite dealing with their grief in different ways, created a sense of familiarity with what McCarthy had experienced even during the pandemic. Hui.
“The movie was about, you never know what’s going to take you to the other side,” McCarthy said. “What’s going to get you out of a bad place.”
McCarthy also relied on her director Melfi, with whom she worked in the 2014 film, St. Vincent.
“He’s such a good storyteller. Without emotion, he can be funny and heartbreaking and episodic, and it never feels like a teaching moment,” McCarthy said. “It’s like, ‘Here it is. What. This is the story of these people, and it is messy and this is up and this is down, and it is sideways.’ And I think we all go through that.”
Melfi wanted to make ‘The Starling’ years ago
While Melfi shot the film in 2019, he wanted to make it a few years ago when he saw Matt Harris’ script for the film. It was this heartwarming story that captivated him.
“It was just a beautiful story about a couple trying to figure out how to make it,” Melfi said. “I’ve been married for 25 years, and I always try to figure out how to make it — in a good way — and that’s what attracted me to the script.”
