Ree Drummond Develops a Spin on the Pizza Roll
Drummond wrote about the pizza roll recipe in a 2016 blog post leading lady The website had some disclaimers and pro tips for someone making “crazy rolls” that she made “on a whim” with leftover cinnamon roll dough.
“I was working out without a prescription, and I had no plans,” she confessed. “The idea came together in about 5 minutes. I had a similar idea to start a blog 10 years ago.”
Drummond also admitted that she may have added a few other options to the recipe when she made it and took the photos, but she didn’t have enough cheese, pepperoni or black olives.
leading lady The star shared how she was inspired to try this recipe after making cinnamon rolls and learned something valuable in the process. “I decided that the next time I make these babies, I’ll use a true pizza dough with a little more chew to it,” she explained. “This dough was a little too soft to pass up for pizza.”
Drummond adjusted the recipe accordingly and included pizza dough in the list of ingredients.
‘The Pioneer Woman’ star’s easy-to-make pizza roll recipe
Drummond’s Pizza Roll recipe is very easy to make and uses store-bought ingredients so it doesn’t take a lot of preparation. She starts by rolling the dough into a rectangle, drizzling olive oil over it, and sprinkling on salt.
Then it’s as easy as piling on the pizza toppings, which will form inside the snack once the dough is rolled out. Drummond spreads on marinara sauce, Parmesan and mozzarella cheese, and Jared Pesto, but added that you can add any toppings you like (like pepperoni, cooked Italian sausage, or black olives).
“And then I decided to try something weird,” Drummond shared. “I cut open a few pieces of string cheese and put them in a line on top of the dough. I don’t know what I’m doing or how it’ll be. But it’s bread and cheese, guys. What’s likely to go wrong ?”
Drummond rolls the dough up, sharing that his technique is to start at the end of the string cheese and “roll the dough toward you, trying to keep the roll as tight as possible.” She pinches the ends of the dough so that no filling can escape and lays it seam side down, then use a serrated knife to cut it into 1-inch-thick slices.
After placing the rolls on a baking pan or skillet, she allows them to rise while the oven preheats, then bakes the pizza rolls in a 400°F oven for 15 to 18 minutes.
Drummonds serves pizza rolls with hot marinara sauce for dipping.
