What You’ll Need to Make Drummond’s Fried Apple Pie

For Fried Apple PiePeeled, and sliced Granny Smith apples are cooked in a skillet with brown sugar, salted butter, vanilla extract, kosher salt, ground cinnamon, lemon juice (“to brighten things up”), and cornstarch. After the apples are soft, set the mixture aside to cool completely.
Now, on to the crust! Drummond says to save yourself some time by using canned refrigerated Flaky Jumbo Biscuits. Roll each biscuit into a 5-inch circle (“you want those edges to be very thin”) and place about two “really generous” tablespoons of apple filling in the center of the rolled-out dough. Dip your finger in the water “and run it along the edge of the crest.” Fold one side (“the edges meet”) to make a half-moon shape. Drummond explains that it’s important to “pull out the air inside the pocket” as you go, otherwise the pie may pop open while frying. Press along the edges using a fork.
Pie is heated in vegetable oil to 350 degrees until golden. Shake on some powdered sugar “just a little extra sweetness on top of them.”
For the Cinnamon Caramel SauceIn a saucepan, start with brown sugar, half-and-half, salted butter, and a pinch of kosher salt. Stir until the mixture becomes thick. Vanilla and cinnamon are added and cooked for a minute or two. Serve with your fried apple pie.
