Keanu Reeves is ‘blown away’ by ‘The Matrix Reactions’
The Wachowskis shared Reeves’ reaction after watching Matrix Resurrection, explaining how the actor called something “intuitive” about the film. Speaking at a panel at the Berlin International Literature Festival in September, the Wachowskis said that Reeves was so impressed by the film, he asked, “How did you do that?”
“We showed Keanu the movie and he was really blown away by it,” the Wachowskis said. “And he said something that was typically Keanu, where it’s incredibly insightful. And he’s just sitting there and you don’t expect some incredible revelation from him in that moment, but like, the accidental genius of Keanu’s roll. Like an off roll.”
He continued, “And he was sitting there, and he goes, ’20 years ago, you told a story in which you talked about the coming 20 years and the problems of the nature of digital, virtual life and how it was going to impact. How we could think about it… and gave us a frame to be able to think about it and talk about it. And you took the same characters and the same stories and the same things, And somehow you made it through the next 20 years.’”
The Wachowskis said, “And he was like, ‘How did you do that?’”
The Wachowskis shed some light on why he revived Neo and Trinity?
The Wachowskis also discuss the personal motivations for reviving Neo (Reeves) and Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss).
“My dad died, then this friend died, then my mom died. I really didn’t know how to process that kind of grief. I had never really experienced it so closely… you know his life was about to end and yet it was really hard,” the Wachowskis explained. “My mind has always reached into my imagination and one night, I was crying and I couldn’t sleep and all of a sudden my mind blew this whole story.”
She continued, “And I couldn’t have my mom and dad, yet suddenly I had Neo and Trinity, arguably probably the two most important characters in my life. Resurrecting these two characters was instantly comforting. Was and it’s very easy.”
“You can look at it and say: ‘Okay, these two people die and well, bring these two people back to life and oh, doesn’t that feel good.’ Yes, it did!,” he added.
Keanu Reeves explains why he returned to the film franchise
in a 2020 interview with Empire, Reeves shared why he was returning for another installment of math question series, recounting how the story “resonated” with him. “Lana Wachowski wrote a beautiful script and an amazing story that resonated with me,” he explained. “That’s the only reason to do it.”
“It is wonderful to work with him again. It’s been really special, and the story has, I think, some meaningful things to say, and we can take some nourishment out of it,” Reeves said.
