Best friends Matt Damon and Ben Affleck reunite to write a film 25 years after the success of their first writing venture good will Hunting. As a result, we have final duel To be released on October 15.
In a recent interview Entertainment Weekly, the two talked about writing together after a long hiatus and adding a third member to their writing team.
What Is ‘The Last Duel’ About?
Based on Eric Jagger’s book of the same name, final duel A period drama inspired by true events in 14th century France. The film, on the face of it, is about the last sanctioned duel in France. But the semi-fictional account looks at the story behind the trial by war. More importantly, it looks at the woman who defied the society to stand up for herself.
Jodie Comer plays Marguerite de Carrouges, who accuses her husband’s friend of sexual assault, Jacques Le Gris, played by Adam Driver. When people begin to question Marguerite, Jean de Carrouges, Marguerite’s husband, played by Damon, challenges Le Gris to trial by war.
Affleck also stars in the film as Count Pierre d’Lençon, who organizes the duel. Directed by Ridley Scott, the film looks at the power dynamics between men and women in medieval France. It examines the role of power and pride in society and raises the important point of believing women. All these, seemingly problems of 14th century Europe, are actually relevant today.
Damon and Affleck wrote the screenplay for the film with Nicole Holofseiner
While Damon first read the book, he didn’t immediately decide to write the screenplay. It was Affleck who suggested. Diving into the writing process, the two soon realized that they needed a third approach for the film other than theirs. Especially for Marguerite, who is the central character in the film and an already untold side of the story.
That’s when Affleck contacted Holofsner, a freelance filmmaker and writer.
Damon and Affleck notably brought Holofsner on board for the part of Marguerite but she ended up writing the screenplay with him and, now, also serves as a producer on the film. However, this was not the only help the two sought in writing the script of the film.
The film’s lead actors, Comer and Driver, also gave their inputs for the writing.
Adam Driver and Jodie Comer help with writing via their feedback
Damon and Affleck commended Driver and Comer’s initiative to bring their own perspective to their characters.
“The hardest two parts for the pair to play were[Comer], Mainly, and Adams[Driver]. We fiddled with that stuff endlessly, tinkered and talked about it and tried to massage it and fretting about it,” Affleck said. “Then show these two actors here who made it work. Huh.”
Both noted that Comer and Driver understood their characters well enough to contribute to their lines in the film.
“I was sitting with Adam”[Driver] For hours, and I would go, ‘What do you think you should say here?’ If something isn’t working for you, usually a dial-in actor will be able to go, ‘It seems’ and give us something we can take back and tinker with. They are definitely part of the process as well,” Damon said.
The actors helped the trio refine the writing on the film, and Damon and Affleck commended that effort.
“You fall in love with him as a writer because you are so grateful,” Damon said.
