According to Harman, 30-year-old deputy Karim Atkins, who had been employed at Precinct 4 since January of 2019, died of a bullet injury. “Deputy Atkins recently returned to work after paternity leave, leaving behind a wife and 6-month-old baby,” Herman wrote in the update.

Other reps who were shot were 28-year-old Darryl Garrett and 26-year-old Jukam Barthen. Herman noted that Garrett was “shot in the back and had surgery and is in the ICU of the city’s Herman Hospital.”

Herman said of the incident, “Deputies Atkins, Garrett and Barthan are true law enforcement heroes who were cowardly ambushed while serving and protecting their community.”
