Hollywood is never short in legal drama, but it’s not every day that you hear of so many big names in lawsuits like Scarlett Johansson and Disney together. That’s exactly what happened in late July when Johansson filed a lawsuit against Disney, claiming breach of contract. A breach that could potentially cost the star a significant amount of money and could set a precedent for other stars. Johansson took a risk by filing a lawsuit, but so far it has been well received by other stars, especially since she realized it could easily have happened to her.
Johansson sues Disney for breach of contract
Movie stars are obviously well paid, but how much they are paid is determined by each film’s contract. Which is why Johansson has taken the bold step of suing Disney for breach of contract for her latest film, Kali Mai. Disney potentially owed Johansson millions of dollars when they decided to release the film simultaneously in theaters and on Disney+, their paid subscription home streaming service.
As a statement from the lawsuit shows, “Disney intentionally abetted Marvel’s breach of agreement without justification to prevent Ms. Johansson from realizing the full benefits of her deal with Marvel.” According to comic book, Johansson and her attorneys claim that Disney released the film for streaming, reducing the box office numbers.
Other stars weigh in in Disney suits
Several other stars in the film are talking about the lawsuit, including another Disney movie star, Elizabeth Olsen. from olsen wanda vision. He praised Johansson for the suit, saying, “I think she is very strict and literal when I read [about the lawsuit] I was like, ‘Good for you Scarlett,’ when it comes to actors and their earnings, I mean, that’s all… So, it’s either in the contract or it’s not.”
During the interview with Elizabeth Olsen, as reported comic bookhandjob ted lasso Star Jason Sudeikis also sided with Johansson on the lawsuit, commenting that the decision is “appropriately badass and on-brand.”
While Sudeikis may have no skin in the game, backing Johansson is an interesting career move for Olsen, who is also a big name in Disney movies. She stars in Disney+’s WandaVision and the upcoming Doctor Strange sequel. While nothing has been said about his comments yet, we can assume that Disney does not condemn the lawsuit filed by Johansson.
What’s next for Johansson?
While speaking publicly about the lawsuit, Disney’s CEO said, “While this filing has no merit, the lawsuit is particularly tragic and in its callous disregard for the horrific and prolonged global impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.” is upset.”
The CEO said, “Disney has fully complied with Ms. Johansson’s contract, and in addition, Kali Mai With Premiere Access on Disney+, she has significantly increased her ability to earn additional compensation on top of the $20 million she has received so far.”
It is expected that Disney will fight the lawsuit, arguing that the pandemic forced them to stop streaming the new release. This was considered an “act of God”, so it was beyond their control. This would mean that the contract is no longer valid, thereby proving Disney right.
In the wake of the trial, Johansson isn’t letting that slow her down. It is rumored that she has already signed on to another incredible role in infamous producer Wes Anderson’s upcoming new film that is yet to be named. However, some of the cast of the film has been leaked and includes some high-profile names like Bill Murray, Margot Robbie and Tom Hanks. So as the lawsuit moves forward, it’s clear Johansson is too.
Scarlett Johansson’s lawsuit isn’t the first time Disney has faced wrath from its stars
