Strictly Come Dancing fans were in tears tonight when Greg Wise dedicated his disco routine to his late sister, Claire.
His emotional tribute drew many onlookers in the house as the 55-year-old revealed that he was supposed to take care of his sister in the last months of his life.
The actor – best known for starring in Sense and Sensibility with his wife Emma Thompson – danced to If You Read My Mind by Ultra Nate, Amber and Jocelyn Enrique.
In a video played before going on the dancefloor with pro partner Karen Hauer, Greg revealed: “My sister was previously diagnosed with breast cancer and had a brutal treatment of chemotherapy.
“But I don’t think she was ever out of the woods, because it was discovered she had bone cancer and died a year later.
“It’s one of the hardest things to do when you’re with someone you love and you’re seeing their pain and fear and you’re working on what you can do to ease it.” “
He added before heading to the dancefloor: “It’s an extraordinary privilege to be able to be cared for in this way, and the privilege and trauma wrap itself in love.
“I think my sister would be absolutely thrilled that I’m doing this because of her.”
People at home were reaching for tissues as they admired Greg’s amazing dance and tribute to Claire.
One fan tweeted: “A truly tribute from Greg Wise to his sister Claire and a great performance, worth 23 points. I have now officially decided I want to win over Greg and Karen… “
Another said: “I still have a big lump in my throat, seeing that Greg Wise dedicated his dance to his sister. He’s right, being with someone in the last days is both a huge privilege and a painful one.” “
Another wrote: “Wow looking @bbcstrictly and I’m in tears. This was an amazing tribute to your sister Greg. So good for your dance! #Strictly”
The mood turned sour when Greg scored and judges Motsi Mabuse, Anton Du Beke and Shirley Ballas gave the actor a respectable score of six and seven, with Craig Ravel Horwood giving Greg just three points.
Those watching at the house were outraged by the apparent hesitation and lack of compassion as Craig told Greg that his performance was “a little bit everywhere” and lamented that it was “too much cardboard cutout”.
One person online scoffed: “Okay. Sorry for the name calling, but Craig is just a little weird. Poor Greg Wise. Even if it wasn’t technically genius, Craig could have adjusted his language so it There was little protection, and that score was outrageous.”
