Local media said Aryan Khan was arrested on Saturday night after raiding a ship from Mumbai and finding narcotics. The court remanded Khan and two others to custody along with the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), the federal agency probing the case.
Shah Rukh Khan’s spokesperson did not respond to requests for comment. Calls to NCB went unanswered outside regular business hours.
Advait Tamhankar, counsel for one of the other two accused, said outside the court room, “They have been accused of consumption, but there is no evidence of that.”
Television cameras showed a crowd of journalists and police surrounding Aryan Khan as he was escorted in a vehicle towards the end of the hearing. He is scheduled to appear before the court again on October 7.
Several high-profile Indian actors and TV personalities have been under the scanner of drug peddlers since last year. In September 2020, several top female actors were questioned by the NCB, although it was not clear how the investigation progressed.
Some Bollywood celebrities have defended Aryan Khan and criticized the media glare surrounding his arrest.
Filmmaker Pritish Nandy said on Twitter on Sunday: “The risk of even the slightest rape is being exaggerated.” “Children make mistakes. Punish him by all means, if the tests confirm his guilt. But don’t crucify him in the media.”
