rainbow brilliant fly
RuPaul has touched a lot of lives during his illustrious career as an entertainer. One of these was apparently Dr. Brian Lessard, an Australian scientist and researcher at Australia’s Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO). Studying ecosystems shifting from the Black Summer bushfires, scientists have actually named a new species of soldier fly they discovered in honor of RuPaul Charles.
According to insiderThe newly classified fly is called Paluma Rupaul, And boasts brilliant iridescent iridescent colors. Lesser always felt inspired by RuPaul, and although they have very different lines of work, they wanted to pay homage to the dive.
“As a gay scientist, it took me a long time to feel comfortable in my own skin in entomology, in a very traditional field of science,” Lesser commented on his reasoning for choosing the name. “I think it’s really important for the next generation of LGBTQ scientists to know that they are being represented in the workplace, because we in the community give legends names to memorable species.”
As exciting as it is to see RuPaul in the taxonomic record, she certainly isn’t the first diva that Lesser has named an insect. The scientists, who actually named more than 50 flies during their research, named one specifically golden-butt fly after Beyoncé in 2012. NBC.
For someone who names a lot of species, Lesser’s intention isn’t purely to immortalize their favorite stars. As he is typically dealing with newly discovered species that are displaced from their natural habitat, the scientists hope that some more attention than naming potentially endangered species will bring them to the desks of regulators and government officials. To give a chance to fight to those who have the power.
While Lesser may have had some marketing intentions when he named this rainbow diva fly after Ru himself, fans should still appreciate how exciting it is for RuPaul to receive such an honor. RuPaul rarely puts anything other than positivity into the world, and whenever you see that small amount of money comes back to someone who has done so well.
