Publishers, including Universal Music Publishing and artist DJ Deadmau5, say the company has not licensed the music used in its games by many of its creators, resulting in a loss of revenue. The lawsuit, filed in the US District Court for the Central District of California Western Division, seeks damages of at least $200 million. Other publisher plaintiffs include entities affiliated with Big Machine Records, Concorde Music Group, Downtown Music Publishing, Cobalt Music Group and the Hypgnosis Songs Fund.

The lawsuit alleges that Roblox, which had 42.1 million daily users as of March, sells users the option to insert a virtual music player or boombox into the games they create on the platform and pump out copyrighted music. The boombox, which has been purchased by hundreds of thousands of users, plays songs recorded by artists such as Deadmau 5 and Imagine Dragons.
