Ezriel Clary R. Started dating Kelly when she was 17 years old. Clary defended Kelly in a 2019 interview with Gayle King, but then testified against Kelly at his New York trial. Cleary tells King how her relationship with Kelly had fallen apart from the age of 17 to 18. At the age of 17, she was also legally a minor. By 18, Clary alleged that Kelly became too controlling.
“The first Christmas I celebrated with him, he allowed me to send him presents,” Cleary told King. “And when I turned 18 he didn’t care. He cut all communication. All the text messages were when he wanted me to see him. All the calls were right in front of him and they can’t last more than five minutes.” It was a very controlled environment. Many people don’t realize it. Many people make fun of it. They say, ‘His parents were paid.’ No, they weren’t. That’s the narrative he portrayed.”

Clary said her parents didn’t give up easily in trying to connect with her. She alleged that Kelly had ways of making sure she was never left alone and unattended. Even though the police tried to intervene, Clary says that Kelly had retaliatory measures.
“He had friends who were officers and they would have alerted him in advance,” Clary said. “So he used to tell us to go to the mall. Then when there is a wellness check, it will be through FaceTime. ‘Hey where are you?’ ‘Oh, I’m at the mall.’ It’s too innocent for him and he already knows that our parents are looking for us but we don’t know. We can’t see that.”
Cleary said that between her 2019 interview with King and her testimony at trial, she realized that her position was not as harmless as she had previously thought.

“Physically, I knew of course I could go on, but there were times where I left off and they always found a way out,” Cleary said. “The way he would manipulate situations and the way he would really tap into it is that you wholeheartedly wanted to bring you back to where it was so toxic. I feel like I don’t recognize myself mentally.” That was lost. He was gone. I was literally there to serve one person and one person.”

In March 2019, King was joined by Alice and Angelo Cleary, Ezriel’s parents. He spoke out against what he believed to be abusing his daughter as Kelly.
“The people inside, some of the other victims we talked to, all of them said the girls had to prove their loyalty by any means possible,” Ellis said. “So it would be a way to prove his loyalty.”
Angelou responded to Kelly’s claim that he was battling an illness. The father could not believe Kelly.

Azreel reportedly moved back home with his parents in January 2020.
The CBS News special states that Kelly’s lawyers and other girlfriends did not respond to requests for comment.
