Princess Diana’s biographer Andrew Morton writes a new book, ‘Meghan and the Unmasking of the Monarchy: A Hollywood Princess’
As for Andrew Morton, there is no doubt in his mind that Prince William contributed to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s exit from the royal family.
In 2018, Princess Diana’s biographer penned a book on the Duchess of Sussex titled “Meghan: A Hollywood Princess,” exploring the former “Suits” star’s rise to stardom and her whirlwind marriage to Harry, 37. On Tuesday, the British author released his book titled Again “Meghan and the Unmasking of the Monarchy.”
Featuring new chapters and interviews with some of Markle’s family members and close friends, it examines the lives of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex behind the doors of the palace as well as their decision to eventually return as senior royals. What happened because
“I was shocked by the similarities between Diana and Meghan, especially in the first two months of the royal family,” Morton told Granthshala News. Meghan said she felt low and isolated – Diana felt the same way. As for Diana, she felt [the palace] There was a place of cold energy – far from what was felt from the outside. It was surprising to me.”
Prince William’s ‘bold ambition’ with Earthshot awards has made Prince Charles ‘very proud of my son’
Markle, a former American actress, became the Duchess of Sussex when she married Harry at Windsor Castle in 2018. The couple welcomed a son named Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor in 2019.
While the romance seemed like a fairy tale made for Hollywood, the couple’s departure from royal duties began in 2020 with what they described as the intrusive and racist attitudes of the British media, 40.
Morton claimed that William, who is second in line to the British throne, contributed to his decision to retreat.
“He was clearly an influence in this,” Morton alleged. “I think Harry resented the fact that he supported his relationship with Kate Middleton over the years. We forget that the palace didn’t believe he and William would marry. They didn’t think he had What it was like to be a future queen, initially. But Harry always supported her. He was always friendly with Katherine. They always joked and laughed together. And the fact that William wouldn’t do it for her Could, didn’t go down well with Harry. There’s no doubt that there was a split between the brothers.”

Morton alleged that 39-year-old William did not welcome his sister-in-law with open arms because he was wary of Markle’s Hollywood background and how it would affect the palace.
“William is a cautious man,” he explained. “He spent eight years with Kate and they broke up at one point before the wedding. As for Harry, Meghan had it right away. But William felt it was too early. And he didn’t know much about his family.” Knew. I remember in those early years, everything that was being told about Meghan’s family was coming from her brother and sister talking to the press.”
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex eventually relocated to the California coastal city of Montecito. But in the wake of leaving royal duties, he gave an explosive TV interview to Oprah Winfrey, in which the couple made painful comments describing how dark Archie’s skin can be. The Duchess spoke about the deep isolation she felt inside the royal family that led her to contemplate suicide.
William was the first member of the royal family to speak out about the allegations, telling reporters: “We are not a racist family.”
In the same interview, Markle opened up about an ongoing rumor that she reportedly made Middleton, 39, cry ahead of her royal wedding to Harry. Markle said it simply “didn’t happen” and instead, it was the Duchess of Cambridge who shed her tears.
“Before Meghan’s wedding, Kate was experiencing a difficult pregnancy [with Prince Louis] And there wasn’t much energy to bond with him,” claimed Morton. “Even after the wedding, they were still getting to know each other. But when the tabloids started pitting them against each other, Meghan was really angry with the press office for not defending her. A press official told him that he could not deny or confirm every single story being written about the royal family. It will never end.”
“I’ve talked to people who know Kate, I’ve seen her in action and she’s not a confrontational person,” Morton continued. “She’s someone who wants to move on with things. The two women didn’t want to fall into the trap of being seen as a duel by the press. They were cordial towards each other and sociable in public. But Meghan felt supported did not do.”
Still, Morton claimed that palace insiders insisted that he try to help Markle early as the tabloid stories intensified.

“It’s clear that Meghan was entering a new world,” Morton said. “But it’s my understanding that he tried to help. Diana talked about brown men who were hostile to her because they were supporters of Prince Charles. And they had problems very early in their marriage. But Meghan and Harry was a double act. There was no cigarette paper between them. They were talented together. And Meghan was seen out and about. My friends would call me and say, ‘I just saw Meghan Is.’ She had a life outside the palace walls and in those early days, she was very popular.”
On July 1, which would have been Diana’s 60th birthday, William and Harry put aside their differences to unveil a statue of their mother at Sunken Gardens in Kensington Palace, London. Royal onlookers hoped the ceremony would provide some insight into their strained relationship.
But brothers are on a different path. William has been under pressure with royal life and the never-ending demands that accompany his role as second in line to the throne. As for Harry, he and his family have no regrets about moving to America in search of a more peaceful existence that he can better control.
“Harry has had a pleasant life in California,” Morton said. “There is no executive in Hollywood who would say no to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex … it’s a big change for them.”
