Royal viewers around the world were shocked when Prince Harry and Meghan Markle announced their decision to step down as senior royals on January 8, 2020. Because so much has happened since then, the dissection of what happened during his time at the firm continues. And it has been written about by commentators and biographers.
Netflix Royal Writers and Historians Crown Robert Lacey has revealed an incident in which he and his wife were publicly reprimanded after the Duke of Sussex reportedly “fought back to tears”. Here’s more on that.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s last royal engagement
It seems like long ago when fans last saw Harry, Meghan, Prince William and Kate Middleton in the same place at the same time. The last time this happened was when they all attended the 2020 Commonwealth Day service at Westminster Abbey. It was also the last royal engagement of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.
Some fans might remember how awkward the conversation between them was that day. William briefly looked up to say “hello” to his brother and Meghan. The couple also greeted him with a smile. However, Kate didn’t even make eye contact with the Sussexes.

But there was reportedly something more going on that day than the inevitable departure of Harry and Meghan, which was looming large.
According to Lacey, Harry was very upset when he was told that he and Meghan would not be part of the procession that day. The procession usually sees all senior members of the family following the queen through the abbey before the service begins. Lacey wrote that “2,000 orders of service had already been distributed around the abbey, explaining that William and Kate will enter and process with the main royal party – and make no mention of Harry and Meghan. So there was the snub in black and white – ready for all to see.”
“Throughout the service, Meghan did away with her best TV smile, but as the ceremony progressed, Harry became depressed,” Lacey elaborated (per To express) adding, “According to one observer, ‘His quick wink also suggested he might be fighting back tears.’”
Prince Harry Was ‘Insane’ By These Royal Wedding Photos
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex haven’t gotten back together in Britain since
Since that day, Harry has returned to England several times to attend the funeral of Prince Philip at St George’s Chapel in Windsor and the unveiling of a statue of Princess Diana at Sunken Gardens at Kensington Palace. However, he was not on any visits with Meghan.
Therefore, the last time the Duchess of Sussex was in the country for the Commonwealth Day service was on March 9, 2020.
