Pennsylvania’s state-run liquor system will begin selling a few dozen products on Friday for what it described as supply shortages beyond its control.
The Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board on Thursday informed license holders that the two-bottle-per-day purchase limit for customers in state stores as well as bars, restaurants and other license holders would remain in place indefinitely.
The PLCB said that “continuous supply chain disruptions and product shortages” led to the ban on certain types of alcohol.

The 43 items on the banned products list will also no longer be available via store-to-store transfers starting Friday.
The rationed liquor list—a small fraction of the vast array of items sold by the state’s liquor system—includes specific types of champagne, bourbon, tequila, cognac, and whiskey. The PLCB said that rationing will remain in place “for the foreseeable future” and until the supply chain becomes more reliable.
The Pennsylvania Licensed Beverage and Tavern Association said it would make it more difficult for members to run their business.
“Supply and labor issues are not helping the pandemic recover”, the trade union said in a statement. “We hope the legislature will take all of this into account when they return to Harrisburg. The industry still needs help moving forward.”
PLCB spokesman Sean Kelly said bars, restaurants and other customers were notified of the purchase restrictions on Thursday.
“If you take a look at the stories that have come out from across the country because of COVID-19, supply chains have been disrupted, production has been disrupted,” Kelly said. “There has been a shortage of cans and bottles in some cases.”
Supply shortages in North Carolina have caused restaurants and bars to scramble to find popular brands, with supply shortages exacerbated by a pandemic-era surge in customer demand.
