New York Attorney General Letitia James is planning to announce a bid to become the state’s next governor, with an official announcement coming as soon as Thursday, according to a report.

“Attorney General Letitia James has made a decision about the gubernatorial race,” said James’ adviser Kimberly Peeler-Allen. “She will announce it in the coming days.”

That decision would be a jump in the race, six Democratic leaders briefed on his plans told the New York Times. James plans to challenge incumbent New York’s incumbent Kathy Hochul, who after his resignation earlier this year, challenged former scandal-ridden incumbent Andrew Cuomo in next year’s Democratic primary.

Democratic insiders say the attorney general’s team is already seeking early support to help drive the campaign after months of deliberating on what to do.

James previously served as Brooklyn’s representative on the New York City Council, and if elected would become the first black woman to be elected governor in the United States.

He has in recent years drawn praise from fellow Democrats for his conflicts with the National Rifle Association and former President Donald Trump, while also overseeing sexual assault allegations against Cuomo, which led to his eventual resignation.

“This is going to be a defining moment for the current attorney general of the same party to challenge the current governor, who are both making history in their own right,” Democratic State Sen. Brad Hoylem told the New York Times.

“This is just the beginning of understanding the differences in candidates and where they stand on various issues and how they differ in their governing philosophy, so we are really at the beginning of what is going to be a very fast moving, but narrowing calendar, ” He continued.

Other Democrats still considering running include New York Mayor Bill de Blasio and Rep. Thomas Suozzi, D.Y., who currently represents New York’s third congressional district.
