An NHS doctor has revealed how having smelly feet can really be good for you.
This is often a source of embarrassment and something we try to avoid, but one TikTok therapist says that Pang is a positive sign.
Dr Karan Raj, who has 3.9 million followers, explains why sweat often gives off a foul odor.
He said in a video: “I want to share with you a fact I recently learned that I can’t believe – and it’s so unbelievable.
“There’s a reason our feet can smell bad—and smelly feet can save your life.
“First of all, you have to understand that from your ears to your piercings, your body is full of life forms.
“The surface of your skin contains probably a thousand different species of worms, and many of these insects prefer to feed on things that leave your body like oil.
“Now, back to stinky feet. There is a species of bacteria called Bacillus subtilis that eats leucine, a common amino acid found in foot sweat.
“When this bacteria eats leucine, it releases isoflavic acid—cheesy, stinky, foot odor.”
He added: “But why are our bodies feeding off this strange bacteria? Good question.
“Our body lives around this bacteria because it produces chemicals and antibiotics that keep foot fungus away.”
Foot fungus can be dangerous as it can cause permanent damage to the nails.
In more severe cases there may be other infections that may spread beyond the legs, such as the arms and groin.
So it’s important that we have this bacteria that is helping to keep our feet in tip top shape, albeit with an added scent that we may have to learn to love…
