House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., traveled to Rome over the weekend to meet with Pope Francis amid the ongoing debate on abortion in the US.

According to a tweet from Pelosi’s account, the meeting in a private audience at the Vatican on Saturday was a “spiritual, personal and official honour.”

Pelosi, a Catholic who has faced criticism for her views on abortion, has maintained over the years that she believes the procedure is part of a woman’s right to choose.

Last month, Archbishop Salvatore Cordilleone San Franciscocalled for a “widespread and visible campaign of prayer and fasting” for the conversion of Pelosi’s heart following the passage of HR 3755, which, according to her, would “enforce abortion on demand nationwide at any stage of pregnancy.”

“This issue requires a change of heart from the majority of our Congressional representatives, beginning with the Leader of the House, Speaker Nancy Pelosi,” Cordillon said in a statement. “I am therefore inviting all Catholics to join a massive and visible campaign of prayer and fasting for Speaker Pelosi: committing to praying one rosary a week and fasting for her conversion on Friday “

Cordillon’s statement came amid a raging abortion debate, which gained steam this month when the Supreme Court allowed Texas to enact its heartbreak bill. The return of a conservative majority in the Supreme Court has also prompted discussions about whether Congress should codify Roe v. Wade, if it is reversed.

Pelosi previously defended HR 3755, titled the Women’s Health Protection Act, and disagreed with Cordillon, who described the measure as “child sacrifice”.

“There was disagreement between the archbishop of the city of that area, San Francisco, and I as to who should decide [family size and timing],” He said. “I believe that God has given us the free will to honor our responsibilities.”

Catholic doctrine teaches that man must use his free will to reject sin, and Catholics consider abortion a sin.

NS section of the Catechism Discussing abortion, says that the procedure and infanticide are “disgusting crimes.”

It states, “The inalienable rights of the individual must be recognized and respected by civil society and political authority.” The Catechism also warns that “when the state does not exercise its power in the service of the rights of every citizen, in particular, the more vulnerable, the foundations of the law-based state are weakened.”

In discussing abortion, Pelosi has also said that “it is none of our business how others choose the size and timing of their families.”

Over the summer, Cordillon insisted that Pelosi and other self-styled Catholics “cannot claim to be a devout Catholic and condemn the killing of innocent human life, let alone the government paying for it.”

Pelosi has also expressed support for abolishing the Hyde Amendment, a federal policy that has prevented most abortions from being funded through Medicaid since 1976.
