Microsoft says it’s been able to ship more new Xboxes than expected — despite ongoing issues with buying one.
Like the PlayStation 5, the new Xbox Series X and S are nearly impossible to buy since they were released almost a year ago. A series of problems – including ongoing chip shortages making them difficult to manufacture, and increasing demand for lockdowns – have meant consoles rarely show up and run out of work as soon as they are done.
But Microsoft says that even in the context of those issues, it managed to do better than expected with shipping consoles to customers.
“We were able to ship more Xbox Series X and S consoles than expected, even if demand exceeds supply,” Microsoft Chief Financial Officer Amy Hood said in a call with investors after the company released its latest results. “
The high demand for consoles has helped generate huge sums of money for Microsoft. Hardware revenue grew 166 percent in the most recent quarter, continuing a year of strong growth.
Overall, gaming revenue grew 16 per cent. But it came amid some struggle in other parts of Microsoft’s gaming business to match interest in the hardware: Services like Xbox Game Pass grew too slowly.
