Maya cries on Jama TV as she remembers how her first romance ended in tragedy – her boyfriend was shot dead for someone else.
She also told that when she was a child her father was jailed and made her strong.
Boyfriend Rico Gordon was hit at the age of 21 by a ricocheting bullet during a 2011 fight in Bristol.
The presenter said: “I turned 16 and I met a guy. He was killed in the summer I had to move to London – and he was my first love.
“Then your whole world just changes because you’re a little girl and you realize, ‘Okay, this is adult stuff going on.’ I was devastated, I was so sad.”
Maya, who dated rapper Stormzy for four years, also burst into tears after telling her father Hussein that he went to jail for bottling a man.
She continued: “I had a situation where my dad was in and out of jail by three. At the time, I didn’t think it bothered me. I just knew it was normal. “
Forced to smile, the 27-year-old continues: “I don’t like crying about that stuff. I have to laugh or I get emotional.
“I’m fine now, but obviously I’m sad for my younger, younger self that I had to deal with.
“I’m glad I made a good situation out of some bad guys.”
Maya opens her heart to Fox’s Fearless 48 Hours, which airs tonight on Channel 4.
New heights for Maya
