Lil Nas X has only been a figure in mainstream music for two years. But during that time, he earned Grammy Awards and set new records in the music industry thanks to his single “Old Town Road”. In September 2021, he released his highly anticipated debut album Montero.
Lil Nas X’s ‘Montero’ album was deeply personal
After the success of “Old Town Road”, Lil Nas X spent most of 2020 like everyone else: in lockdown to focus on nothing but himself. During that period he was inspired to record music that was more personal than anything he had done before.
He released the lead single from Montero, “Montero (Call Me By Your Name),”, early 2021. He sparked controversy from the get-go by embracing what he had been told about his sexuality over the years: that he was a sinner who was going to hell. He impressed even more people by performing songs that included pole dancing with one of his dancers and kissing on a stage.
The album’s second single, “Sun Goes Down”, was an honest reflection on his suicidal thoughts before he became famous. In the song “That’s What I Want” and the accompanying video, Lil Nas openly sang about wanting someone by his side just to have sex.
Lil Nas X credits music for saving his life
Lil Nas X wrote nearly 100 songs for ‘Montero’
Recording Montero There was a catharsis process for Lil Nas X. In an interview with Apple Music, he stated that there were several dozen tracks that did not make the final cut.
“I was really just making music,” he said of the process. “A lot of things start with just melody runs; just doing a bunch of different tunes on an instrument or a loop that I love, or [that] I’m like and I’m like, ‘Okay, where can we take this?’”
“From there, with just the tunes, I was like, ‘I already know what this song is about. Let me fill in [blanks] With words,” he continued. “And it works almost every time.”
“We cut [the tracklist] Over and over and over until I found what I felt were most important to the album,” he concluded. When Lowe asked him how many tracks he considered for the album, he estimated “about 100.”

Hit Songs of ‘Montero’
“Old Town Road” changed the music — and the life of Lil Nas X — after its 2019 release. The collab with Billy Ray Cyrus set a new record for spending the most weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 chart with 19 weeks at number one. Total. It also became the first song in history to earn a 15-time platinum certification, selling over 15 million copies.
Lil Nas was worried he wouldn’t be able to match that success Montero. But “Call Me By Your Name” was their second number-one hit, and the single “Industry Baby” peaked at number two on the chart.
