Lil Nas X has become one of the biggest names in music in just a few short years. The Grammy-winning artist burst onto the scene in 2019 with her song “Old Town Road”, which became the best-selling song of all time. He was able to do this with the help of Billy Ray Cyrus.
Lil Nas X rose to fame with the help of Billy Ray Cyrus
Lil Nas X first released “Old Town Road” in December 2018. The song slowly went viral on TikTok, and in April 2019, Billy Ray Cyrus worked on a remix of the song. The version with Cyrus launched Lil Nas to stardom.
“Old Town Road” put Lil Nas X on the map and put the country and hip-hop worlds on notice. The song has sold over 15 million copies in the US – the first song in history to achieve the feat. It also set a new record for most weeks spent at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, with a total of 19 weeks at the top spot.

When it came time to record their first album Montero, Lil Nas adopted many other sounds than just country. He ventured into pop, rock and even emo. Throughout the album, he reveals some very personal truths about his life and his upbringing, and eventually finds joy in celebrating himself.
The album ends with the touching track “Am I Dreaming” in collaboration with Miley Cyrus. The song is deeply personal, and he was grateful to have Cyrus on the track. “You will always be my little child!” she said about the rapper in a instagram Post. “Thank you for ripping me off my first album! I love you!”
In a 2021 interview with Zane Lowe, Lil Nas expressed his gratitude for the Cyrus family — specifically Billy Ray — when many others in the industry stood by him. “They came and they were absolutely lovely to me,” he said earnestly.

Lowe then asked Lil Nas about his relationship with Miley before and after working with him.
“Miley is the sweetest person ever,” she said graciously. “And I think he’s one of those people who doesn’t know how influential and how much of a legend they already are, and what they’ve done and what they’re doing right now.
“I really admire him and his ability to constantly transform himself,” he continued. He also said that he sympathized with finding himself in the limelight after a predetermined identity—in this case, that of a Disney Channel star—was given to him. “It’s so hard to do, and I respect that.”
