It ensured that Red Bull driver Verstappen took a six-point lead over the seven-time world champion in the drivers’ championship standings.
“Today it was not easy, the track was smooth and we had to manage the tyres throughout the race,” Verstappen told the F1 website. “Valteri’s pace was a bit high, but we’re happy to be second – it’s easy to get it wrong and drop back.”
Hamilton pitched for new tires on lap 51 in a 58-lap race – a decision from the Mercedes team that did not go down well with the 36-year-old driver.
“We shouldn’t have come in. Massive cereal man. I told you!!” A Tasty Hamilton said on Mercedes team radio.
Sergio Pérez in the second Red Bull finished third with Charles Leclerc of Ferrari in fourth.
There are six more races with the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, which kicks off the 2021 season, on 12 December.
“It’s been a while, but it feels good,” Bottas told the F1 website after receiving his first checkered flag of the season.
“From my side, one of the best races I’ve ever had – everything was under control. Everything went smooth for me for once.”
