According to last-minute rumours, Apple may be releasing a major overhaul of the MacBook Pro.
The company’s latest event, titled “Unleashed,” is due out in a matter of hours. It is expected to focus on the new versions of the MacBook Pro, in new 14- and 16-inch sizes.
The company is almost certain to reveal a new version of the M1 chip, which debuted last year in the smaller MacBook Pro as well as the MacBook Air and Mac Mini. It has since come to the iMac and even the iPad Pro.
While that chip was praised for its performance, it’s still focused on battery life and efficiency and doesn’t have enough power to rival more professional tools used for intensive tasks like video editing.
The new computers are expected to bring that capability, in a new processor rumored to be known as the “M1X” and which will take the same foundation but build in more power.
Computers were also rumored to be getting some redesign, perhaps embracing flat sides starting with the iPad, coming to the iPhone, and appearing in the latest iMac.
The new design could be more radical than that, however, according to a late rumor that suggests they will feature a notch in the top of the display.
With the iPhone, that’s where the notch first appeared, which would allow the screen to wrap all the way to the sides of the MacBook, and do away with the black bezel. The notch then allows all the components that need to be on top of the display – such as the camera and light sensor – to sit unobtrusively.
Those rumors have only surfaced in the recent past and there is nothing to indicate that they are certain. They can also be saved for future versions of the MacBook Pro.
Apple may also opt to release the long-running AirPods 3 during the event. Those earbuds – which were expected for months but haven’t appeared yet – are said to include some of the features of the AirPods Pro, such as their shorter stalks, but at a lower cost.
