Kroger is trying to fill 20,000 positions nationwide in an effort to prepare for the holiday season, despite continuing widespread labor shortages.

To do so, the country’s largest grocery chain is hosting Hybrid Hiring Event On 13 October where it will seek to fill retail, e-commerce, manufacturing, supply chain, merchandising, logistics, corporate and pharmacy and health care roles.

The move will help the company, which serves more than 11 million customers every day across dozens of brands, prepare for the upcoming season “where customers plan to return to large family gatherings and celebrations,” according to Kroger. Tim Massa, senior vice president and chief people officer, said.

However, to attract applicants amid widespread labor shortages, the company said it was offering “opportunity and career culture with objectives, competitive pay and benefits, and flexible schedules”, Massa continued.

The company says it is investing an additional $350 million in its affiliates in 2021. This includes raising the nationwide average hourly wage by more than $16 “and when combined with benefits, the total compensation exceeds $21 an hour,” Kroger said.

The company isn’t alone in a mad dash of hiring many employees ahead of what is anticipated to be a busy holiday season.
