Bird worked with Judy Schindlin for nearly 25 years
Judge Judy Schindlin’s longtime bailiff Petrie Hawkins-Bird talks about not being invited to appear on her new IMDb TV show, “Judy Justice,” after working with the celebrity for 25 years.
Byrd is perhaps best known to fans as the no-nonsense bailiff, who made sure no one was out of line in the courtroom on “Judge Judy.” He was with her till the show ended in 2021. However, speaking in a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Bird explained that he was not aware that Schindlin was moving on until a new TV project was announced.
“My impression is that if you were going to do anything else, you were going to at least ask me if I needed the opportunity to audition for the role.” Bird explained.
In a statement to Granthshala News, Sheinlind confirmed that Bird is not going to act as bailiff on his new show.
Judge Judy Schindlin Lands New Courtroom Show: ‘Over the Moon’
“Bird is fantastic and we’ve had a great run for 25 years. It’s an entirely new show with a completely new cast and an exciting energy,” the statement read.
Unfortunately, the famous bailiff wasn’t able to give much of his attention when asked not to join “Judy Justice.” After filming on “Judge Judy”, he devoted his time caring for his wife, Makita Bond-Bird. She served as producer on “Judge Judy” for a long time and was reportedly invited on “Judy Justice”, but health problems made this impossible.
The outlet reports that she had completed her third round of chemotherapy and was about to undergo brain surgery, where doctors successfully removed 95 percent of the tumor. After her family’s worst conflict, Byrd says she called her former boss to ask if she should plan on joining his new show after working with her since 1996.
“He informed me that I was not being asked to come along on the project,” Byrd explained. “I didn’t ask why, it’s her choice. But she told me that fundamentally, I was cast as the new bailiff on her new show. My salary would have been much higher. I was curious: How would she know? Is? He didn’t ask me. He didn’t give me a chance to accept a lower salary.”
“The call with Judy ended quite happily,” he said. “I don’t think he understood how confused and frustrated I was after being there for 25 years from the start of my career, and not given the chance to say at least whether I wanted to continue that relationship. “
Luckily, Bird is taking the situation forward. He has also been able to surpass his fame in a guest appearance on “The Bold and the Beautiful” as well as some voiceover work as Schindlin’s former bailiff. He concluded his interview with the outlet by noting that he believes the situation is part of his fate.
“God has something else in store for me,” he concluded.
