John Cho plays Spike in ‘Cowboy Bebop’
Cho had some time to really get into Spike’s mind. While filming the first few scenes of the Netflix show, Cho tore his ACL. He had to undergo surgery to fix it. Cho said that he spent his time doing knee exercises and thinking about the main character of Cowboy Bebop.

However, he has got the hair to play the role. Training for the role was not easy
For the role of Spike, Cho had to train like a superhero. There’s a shirtless scene in the first episode and Cho called that “really tense.” Like the Marvel Cinematic Universe and similar action roles, getting the physique for the slim Gunlinger and Bounty Hunter took working out and dieting. He talked in an earlier interview about how he didn’t want to “diet and work out like crazy”, but did something for the role.
Cho had to watch what he ate, and he said the training was to become “functionally athletic.” Unfortunately, all that training didn’t help much when he collapsed during filming. He attributed it to lack of sleep. He fell and tore his ACL, which required surgery, and took a brief halt to filming.
At the time, Netflix did not explain why filming stopped, but Cho was candid about his injury. He said he thought about Spike Spiegel while he was recovering.
What was John Cho’s biggest fear about playing Spike?
