Celebrity Jay Leno has been heavily criticized throughout the years (there was even a book written about his experience taking over as host). The Tonight Show), but no one can deny that he was one of the most hardworking people in show business. Leno apparently had his work ethic well ahead of his time as a comedian.
One of Leno’s first jobs was working at McDonald’s, where he had a job that specifically helped him build a part of his body. Here’s the story of what Leno went through while working out there, which oddly enough gave him an unusual workout.
Jay Leno’s First Job Wasn’t In Show Business
Leno did one of the hardest things he’s ever done in show business: replacing a legend. In 1992, Leno assumed the hosting duties of The Tonight Show, taking over from Johnny Carson. Leno’s debut on the show was marked by controversy, as NBC chose him to replace Carson’s chosen successor, David Letterman. After a rocky start, Leno remained the ratings leader in late night TV for several years.
But before doing so, he worked at McDonald’s in Andover, Massachusetts, according to CNBC. Leno said:
“I worked at a Main Street restaurant for two years, from 1966 to 1968. This was back in the good old days when they still roast beef and strawberry shortcakes, which I was a big fan of.”
There was one activity, in particular, that Leno was engaged in at work, which left him looking much more fond than before, if he was to be believed. This included the famous McDonald’s fries.

So how did Leno earn his living working at the famous fast-food chain? He was on fry duty – sort of. Instead of working as a fry cook, Leno helped prepare potatoes for later cooking. Leno said:
“French fries had to be made from scratch. We had to cut into pieces what seemed like a ton of potatoes every day… I had these massive forearms from chopping those potatoes.”
It’s almost a comical image, thinking Leno has Popeye’s arms while slicing a potato. But this is how he earned a living for a while before making it big. After Leno left McDonald’s, he later tried his hand at comedy, and the rest was history.
Jay Leno doesn’t need to peel potatoes anymore
Of course, Leno became a comedian who would go on to achieve worldwide fame and fortune. By any standard, he is one of the most successful late night hosts of all time. He had high ratings during his long career at NBC.
Leno has taken good advantage of his success. According to celebrity net worth, his net worth is $450 million. In addition to being a well-known comedian who still performs stand-up comedy, Leno is also known for collecting classic cars.
It shows how far he has come. Leno began his professional career by slicing potatoes that looked like he had curled up all day. Now? He can buy almost any car he wants to buy. This is in stark contrast to his days as a McDonald’s employee.
