Businessman and former New Jersey state legislator jack ciatarelli, a Republican, is hoping to oust Gov. Phil Murphy, who has been attempting to become the first Democrat to be re-elected to the Garden State since 1977.

Born in 1961 in Somerville, Ciatarelli grew up in nearby Raritan, where his grandparents immigrated from Italy. He attended Seton Hall University and earned degrees in accounting and finance.

Ciattarelli became involved in local politics in the 1990s, serving on Raritan Borough Council from 1990 to 1995. From 1991 to 1995, he served as the chairman of the council.

In 2011, Ciatarelli won a race to represent New Jersey’s 16th legislative district in the New Jersey General Assembly. He served there till 2018. He ran for governor of New Jersey in 2017 and came second in the primary.

Ciattarelli also owns a medical publishing company and served as an assistant professor at his alma mater from 1998 to 2001.

As with the Virginia gubernatorial race, the race between Murphy and Ciatarelli has garnered national headlines, with former President Obama campaigning for both Murphy and Virginia gubernatorial candidate Terry McAuliffe last week.

According to recent polls, Murphy still has a comfortable lead over Ciatarrelli real clear politics. Murphy’s smallest advantage is six points in an Emerson poll conducted between October 15-18. Other polls show Murphy with an even bigger advantage, including a new Monmouth poll that gave Murphy an 11-point lead.

NJ Democrats defame Goop gubernatorial candidate for wanting to ban abuse

The campaign nodded earlier this month about a profane advertisement that skewered Ciatarelli to support a ban on cursing once he served on Raritan Borough Council.

Chris Russell, general adviser to Citterelli’s campaign, told Granthshala News in a statement about the ad: “Jack is living rent-free in Governor Murphy’s head. Phony Phil from Massachusetts ‘Acting Jersey’ And I think he’s about to feed into the worst stereotypes about the state the way to do it. What’s next – auditioning to replace Ronnie on Jersey Shore next season? If so So, I suggest that he return to his Italian villa after the loss and work on that body.”
