A bloodied Iowa teen has been charged by police with stabbing his parents with a knife and ax because he wanted to “take responsibility for his own life,” officials said.

The department said 17-year-old Ethan Orton told Cedar Rapids police officers that he killed his parents when they responded at Orton’s home just after 2 a.m. Thursday following reports of a suspect in the area. He was found “soaked in blood” outside the house.

Cedar Rapids Police Chief Wayne German said, “I don’t know if he was expecting the police to come. When we arrived, the officer who confronted him at first told him he was calm.” KWWL-TV.

When officers checked on Orton, the teen reportedly told them that he had killed his parents.

Inside the house, officers found the parents dead in the living room. They were identified as 42-year-old Casey Arthur Orton and 41-year-old Misty Don Scott Slade.

There are two counts of first-degree murder on Orton. Police said that the case has been filed in the adult court. He is being held at the Lynn County Detention Center on a $2 million bond.

The allegations obtained by KWWL state that Orton used a knife to stab his parents. Then he allegedly used an ax to kill his mother when he realized that she was still alive.

“Sick to my stomach. You don’t think this kind of thing can happen, and you don’t think it can happen in your neighborhood,” neighbor Jean Garrett told the news outlet. “And here it is in our neighborhood, and we have a nice neighborhood. It’s really hard to process. I still remember him laughing and joking with me a few weeks ago.”

In a separate case, Alexander Jackson, an Eagle Scout and a student at the University of Iowa, was charged with shooting his parents and younger sister at their home in Cedar Rapids.

The murder comes a month after a 20-year-old man in Cedar Rapids was charged with the murders of his parents and sister. Alex Jackson, a college student, initially told investigators that a masked intruder had committed triple murder before arresting and indicting him.
