Three other tourists, a German man and a Dutch woman, were injured in a gunfight near the main strip of Tulum.

In response, the German Foreign Office issued a travel advisory telling Germans visiting resort destinations in Mexico, “If you are currently in the Tulum or Playa del Carmen area, do not leave your secure hotel facilities behind. “

According to prosecutors, the shootout began between two drug-dealing groups who operate in the heavily visited area.

The investigation revealed that “there was an armed conflict between criminal groups devoted to the sale of drugs,” said the local district attorney.

Tulum Mayor Marciano Dzul Caiman tweeted on Thursday: “I strongly condemn the tragic events that took place in Tulum last night in which two people lost their lives and three others were injured.”

The passengers were eating at a bar called La Malequerida in the tourist center and were likely caught in the crossfire.

After the shooting, American tourist James Graham said he had come to Tulum with thoughts of potentially buying a property to rent on Airbnb, but “the surprising shooting gave him a second thought.

“Right now, we’re not so sure we’re going to buy anything here,” he said.

Graham explained, “I think what was surprising, was we felt that this type of crime was not necessarily the main tourism sector, just because it is such a big part of the economy.” “You would think that you would be very careful to make sure that you know that tourists feel very safe coming here.”
