Prince William had a real-life James Bond experience in 2019
CNN In April 2019 it was reported that William had spent three weeks in the shadow of UK security and intelligence agencies. The Duke of Cambridge’s time with the agencies was particularly centered around the UK’s fight against terrorism.
The father of three – he and parents to Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis – did not visit one of the UK government’s intelligence agencies. William visited all three; The Secret Intelligence Service is commonly referred to as MI6, Government Communications Headquarters or GCHQ, and the Security Service is also referred to as MI5.
In the fly-on-the-wall experience, William was overseeing each agency’s intelligence and counter-terrorism measures. So how did the Duke of Cambridge do it? GCHQ’s head of counter-terrorism operations said William “held himself out” during his time with analysts and operators. He “asked some investigative questions and demonstrated a real understanding of our missions.”
Prince William’s James Bond experience was ‘really humbling’
So how did William describe the three weeks he spent hiding under British intelligence? He called it “really polite.”
“It was a humbling experience indeed to spend time inside our security and intelligence agencies, understanding more about their significant contribution to our national security,” he said.
“These agencies are full of people from everyday backgrounds doing the most extraordinary things to keep us safe,” the Duke of Cambridge said. “They work in secret, often not even telling their family and friends what work they do or the stress they face.
“They are inspired by an unmatched patriotism and dedication to uphold the values of this country,” he concluded. “We all express our deep gratitude to him for the difficult and dangerous work he has done.”
