The house of horrors where a woman was kept half-naked in a cage by two men, was mysteriously burned down as her alleged abductors sat in prison.
James Phelps and Timothy L. Norton has been charged with kidnapping 33-year-old Cassidy Rainwater, who was reported missing on July 24.
Phelps, 58, was arrested on September 16 after investigators found seven photos on his phone showing Rainwater half naked and confined in a cage at his home in Lebanon, Missouri.
Police arrested 65-year-old Norton four days later after learning that he had helped Phelps stop the victim.
But on Monday, the house where the rain water was closed collapsed.
Several firefighters reacted to the scene where they worked out the hotspots.
Footage of the fire showed smoke billowing out of Phelps’s wooden house and by Wednesday morning nothing was left of the house except a pile of smoldering ash.
According to Fox4, a Dallas County deputy found something in the property that resembled a tripwire—an explosive device or something used to operate a gun.
A local bomb squad was sent to the scene to investigate and officials said they later detonated an explosive device near the fire area.
The fire department is now investigating the cause of the fire.
It comes as Phelps and Norton appeared on a webcam Tuesday in front of a judge whose preliminary hearing is scheduled for November 5.
It is reported that the last known person to see rainwater was Phelps – who was first questioned by police on September 1.
The New York Post reported that she told officers she let him stay with her until she was back on her feet to go to Colorado.
But she claimed that she had left her home a month ago – leaving in the middle of the night – and has not been in contact with him since.
Investigators obtained a search warrant for Phelps’ phone and there they discovered disturbing images of rainwater being held captive.
Police also noticed that his house had been “robbed” and nothing related to rainwater was found in the house.
Norton gave police “misinformation” when brought in for questioning on September 19.
The next day, Norton reportedly confessed to learning that rainwater had been held captive at Phelps’ home.
Norton and Phelps are charged with kidnapping, terrorizing a felony facility, causing hurt and missing rainwater.
33 years old rain water is still missing.
