Garten demonstrates how to make her apple cake tatin recipe in an episode of Barefoot Contessa, noting that it is “a much simpler version of a French apple tatin.”
NS Barefoot Contessa The star started out by making homemade caramel sauce. He mixed sugar and water in a pan and cooked it on the stovetop “until it was browned and caramelized, about 360 degrees on a candy thermometer,” she explained.
Garten then cored the apples and cut them into wedges and placed them in a greased glass pie pan. “And then when you flip it, they’re going to show all the caramelized apples, it’s going to be great,” she said. NS Barefoot Contessa Star pours caramel syrup over apples.
For the “Really Simple Cake” atop apples and caramel, Garten whisked together butter and sugar, then added eggs, sour cream, lemon zest, and vanilla extract and whisked the ingredients together. In a separate bowl, sifted together all purpose flour, baking powder and salt and slowly added it to the mixer while it was running on slow speed.
“It’s going to be puffy and golden and it’s gorgeous when you turn it upside down,” explained Garten, spreading the batter over the apples and caramels.
The Food Network host baked the cake in a 350 degree Fahrenheit oven for 30 to 40 minutes. When the cake was baked, Garten ran a knife across the edge of the cake and the dessert came out. “It’s got caramelized apples on the bottom and a nice light cake on top,” she explained, adding a sprinkle of powdered sugar on top.

Ina Garten Makes an Impressive Apple Tart
Garten also has a beautiful apple tart recipe that uses store-bought ingredients so it’s ready in no time.
He showed how to make apples tart. in an episode of Barefoot Contessa. “I don’t think there’s a French pastry shop or a French bistro that doesn’t serve an apple tart,” she said. “And the truth is, it’s a really simple thing. It’s just pastry, applesauce, butter, and sugar.”

Garten had an ingenious trick for pastry. “So what I use is puff pastry. Frozen puff pastry, you buy it at the grocery store,” she shared. “And I leave it in the fridge, so when I’m done with it So it’s nice and cold.”
She said, “Of course, you can make your own pastry, but with puff pastry, it’s so fabulous — why would you bother?”
NS Barefoot Contessa Star arranged sliced Granny Smith apples on squares of pastry, overlapping fruit. Then she sprinkled sugar on each tart and buttered them before baking the dessert in a 400 degree Fahrenheit oven for 40 minutes. She finished off each tart with a handy apricot glaze brush.
