Max was an innocent bystander who didn’t stand a chance against the vengeful fisherman killer, and had no idea what his friends did that summer. He was concentrating on his business in crab fishing when he caught a hook with his chin. Her body was dragged across the table, stuffed into Julie’s car, and then carried around as part of the killer’s ill-fated play.

Gillespie said, “When we previewed the film, it became clear what a huge advantage it would be for the film if we saw him act violently one more time.” He wrote Galecki’s scene as a special addition and shot it after he finished filming. He later placed it at the beginning of the film.

“What he did was we got another hour into the film,” he said. The point was to showcase the killer’s brutal ways in a single moment and create suspense throughout the film.

Gillespie didn’t want the movie to be bloody

Behind the scenes, Gillespie set the tone that he didn’t want the movie to be bloody. He felt that Max’s death was going to be shocking, and he wanted to keep any blood trauma values to a minimum.

“Initially, I refused to shoot any blood,” he said. “There were moments when the officers wanted us to shoot more gore.” He shared that there was no blood at first in Elsa’s death from the hook. But studio executives disagreed, saying it was medically impossible. Gillespie re-shot the sequence and added a tiny splash of blood to that store scene. Moments later, Gellar’s character was spared from a gruesome death performance.

Amazon’s reboot will show the same story again

Ending October 15, the new TV series will follow a new group of teenagers down a dark road. While it’s not clear what fatal accident enrages a fisherman with a hook, cryptic messages, scary encounters, and death are certain.
