A woman and child are taken to hospital after a fire broke out on the 20th floor of a block of flats in south London.
Ten fire tenders and 70 firefighters were brought under control on Westbridge Road in Battersea this evening.
Crews were called from Battersea, Fulham, Wandsworth, North Kensington and surrounding fire stations after 8 p.m.
Dramatic footage on social media shows flames rising from a tall building as smoke rises above.
A woman and child were taken to the hospital and 50 others vacated the building.
The London Fire Brigade said in a statement: “Ten fire engines and approximately 70 firefighters have been called to extinguish a fire in a block of flats on Westbridge Road in Battersea.
“There is a flat downstairs on the 20th floor. A woman left the affected flat before the brigade arrived. She is being assessed for inhalation of smoke at the scene.”
Station Commander Pete Johnson said: “On arrival there was a lot of smoke coming from the top of a block of flats.
“Lots of flames were also visible due to which our control officers received a large number of calls.
“Firefighters are working hard to control the fire.
“Many roads are closed all over the place.”
At present, the cause of the fire is not known.
The London Fire Brigade said that the fire was brought under control by 8.53 pm.
