Parton has long been waiting for the right musician to cover this famous song, in hopes that it will be closed to someone else. Is Lil Nas X just the man for the job?
Lil Nas X’s opinion on ‘Jolene’
When “Jolene” came out, it was a fresh take on the classic country song about cheating. Instead of targeting the song at the man who is slipping, the singer turns to the woman his love has fallen for Jolene. Parton’s version is full of desperation, with high trills and passionate laments. You can hear the bewilderment and pleading in his voice. Lil Nas X’s version is slow, low, sad. From Lil Nas X’s perspective, this song tells a different story. He may be singing about a straight man who will never avenge his love. Or a bi man who has fallen for a woman named Jolene. The result is a defeated, heartbroken man who already knows how this is going to end.
