Scary season is underway which means thousands of people have started watching Cheat. Although the film premiered in 1993, it has become a cult classic. In fact, the movie is so beloved that Disney has greenlighted a sequel: cheat 2. The sequel, which will premiere on Disney+ in the fall of 2022, even boasts some of the original cast.
‘Hocus Pocus’ was a box office flop when it first premiered
Although Cheat Now that it is well-liked, it did not do well when it was first released. In fact, it quite flopped. This was likely due to timing. Although the film is apparently made for Fall, Disney decided to release the film in Summer of Dead. The film premiered on July 16, 1993, long before the Halloween season began. Due to this the film performed poorly at the box office. Furthermore, the critical reception for the film at the time was overwhelmingly negative.
Leonardo DiCaprio turned down the main character in the cast
Luckily, Cheat It made progress in the following years. However, the film that fans know and love could have looked completely different. For example, the role of Max Dennison could have been played by Oscar winner Leonardo DiCaprio. However, when he turned it down, Omri Katz was cast in the role.
“Basically the thing was for Max – Leonardo DiCaprio being Max,” Cheat Producer, David Kirshner, shared Entertainment Weekly. “And that was exciting because here was this young, cute, kid. And how exciting that was, the idea that maybe this kid, who had just [What’s Eating] Gilbert Grapes, Will be doing this film. He turned it down.”
A ‘Hocus Pocus’ cast made filming too difficult
Undoubted, Cheat It was successful even without DiCaprio’s star power. The cast really enjoyed bringing this funny story to life. However, an unlikely cast member made filming more difficult. While Sean Murray brought to life the human version of Thackeray Binx, his cat version was portrayed by an actual cat. This was very time consuming as cats are temperamental and it proved very difficult to use them in the film.
“What I discovered was that it’s impossible to train cats,” Murray reveals about filming Cheat in the above interview. “You can’t train a cat. Looks like we went on movie twice as long because of these cats.”
Thackeray Binx is mostly portrayed by a real cat
fans of Cheat It may come as a surprise to learn that very few special effects were used for the cat version of Thackeray. “Thackeray himself – there are moments where there is some animatronics, but for the most part, Thackeray is a real cat,” shared Kirschner. Although using a real animal can be challenging, clearly the payoff was worth the effort. Only time will tell if another animal is used for the sequel.
