Sarah Jessica Parker’s Relative Was Arrested for Witchcraft
Cheat It takes place in Salem, Massachusetts, a city infamous for its history of persecuting witches. Its legacy still haunts American history, and Parker once learned of his family’s connection to the witch trials.

According to rogue localEsther (Dutch) Elwell, of Gloucester, was arrested along with two other women during the 1690s. The local historical society still had the records. A woman named Mary became ill, and a 17-year-old accused Elwell and two others of approaching Mary as a “spectator”, strangling and squeezing her. When she died, all three were arrested on charges of witchcraft based on juvenile charges.
Fortunately, the local government ended the trials before Elwell could reach court, and she was 82 years old. This was the last witch case in his area. Parker took some time to visit the cemetery where several of the accused were buried. “There were generations that lost because of this,” she remarked.
