If I can’t love, I need power Follows Halsey’s experience with pregnancy and motherhood. Shortly after the album was dropped, Lizzie Goodman moderated a discussion Between Halsey, Reznor and Ross at Capital Studios.
During the conversation, the singer-songwriter shared how she started working on the concept album.
“Last summer, right around June or July, I started working on the record I felt like peaking at house orders. And I think the first song I wrote was ‘Lilith ‘ was,” said Halsey, referring to a song If I can’t love, I need power.
The singer continued, “And it was kind of, it was kind of speedball. Where I was just like bracing my guts and being like ‘I’m a piece of s**t.

Halsey sent a letter to Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross
While Halsey shared the backstory of starting to write the album during a moderate conversation, Reznor and Ross also revealed how they got involved in the project.
“Around that time, we received an incredibly eloquent letter from Halsey,” Reznor said. “It was flattering, and it was nice to receive. But it was also the epitome of authenticity.”
He continued, “And it was interesting, you know? Asked, to effect, ‘I’m telling a story about the following things. It means a lot to me. I really want to make it powerful’ And want to make an impact, and tell this story. Can you help or can you weigh in on any level that might help to deliver?’”

Reznor admitted that it would have been “easier to say no” to work on it. If I can’t love, I need power. However, Reznor and Ross asked Halsey to send her some tracks from the album.

After Reznor and Ross asked for music, Halsey sent four songs to the musicians. If I can’t love, I need power.
“When I listened to the tracks I could hear something in there that felt like it, knowing what you just wrote to us, made sense. But I didn’t feel like it delivered what you were asking for.” Reznor told Halsey during a moderate conversation.
Over the course of a week, Reznor and Ross decided to “experiment” and create music around Halsey’s vocals on four tracks to send back to the singer.
The rest is history, and the trio decided to collaborate on the album together.
