Santa Fe County Sheriff’s officials said the cinematographer and director was shot Thursday on the pastoral film set in the desert on the southern outskirts of Santa Fe, New Mexico.

The sheriff’s department said Hutchins, 42, was taken to the University of New Mexico Hospital, where he was pronounced dead by medical personnel.

Souza, 48, was taken by ambulance to Christus St Vincent Regional Medical and has since been released.

A spokesman for Alec said there had been an accident on set that involved a misfire of a prop gun with Blank, although without a metal projectile charge it is unlikely to have been killed at medium range.

Santa Fe New Mexican reported that the 63-year-old was seen in tears outside the sheriff’s office on Thursday. The International Cinematographers Guild confirmed that the woman who was fatally shot was Hutchins.

“Details are unclear at this time, but we are working to learn more, and we support a full investigation of this tragic incident,” Guild President John Lindley and Executive Director Rebecca Raine said in a statement.

The star broke his silence on Friday morning. He offered condolences to Hutchins’ family and called the shooting an accident.

“I am fully cooperating with the police investigation to find out how this tragedy happened and I am in touch with her husband, offering my support to him and his family. My heart goes out to her husband, Broken for his son and all those who knew and loved Halina,” the actor concluded.

Hutchins, a 2015 graduate of the American Film Institute, served as director of photography in the 2020 action film “Arkenemy,” which starred Joe Manganiello. She was named a “rising star” by American cinematographers in 2019.

The investigation continues.
