Viewers of Grand Designs were stunned when a couple spent £300k renovating their dream property – but it still doesn’t have a kitchen.
Presenter Kevin McCloud met an ambitious couple who planned to turn a 200-year-old Blacking Mill into a new-build hybrid.
Rob and Ruth had planned to spend 18 months converting the house, but were told that the building was not structurally strong.
Three and a half years later, Kevin revisited the property to see if the couple had completed the renovation.
The couple initially had a budget of £250k, but they revealed they had increased it to £300k in order to completely overhaul the mill – and were still not finished.
Upon his return, Kevin notices that the Cumbrian couple does not have a kitchen.
He also revealed that he still had three double bedrooms and a work space to complete.
Viewers were amazed that the couple had gone over budget and were still kitchen-less.
One wrote: “But it’s not 300,000k, is it. #GrandDesigns It’s still not finished. 3 double bedrooms, a proper kitchen, work space etc.”
Another posted: “£300k *so far*. It’s not finished yet.”
“Jesus. What a joke. They haven’t built a house for £1k psqm, it’s not over bloody,” shared a third.
A fourth addition: “Imagine that nice house. But a camp stove kitchen.”
Grand Design airs Wednesdays at 9 pm on Channel 4.
