A devastated couple faced disaster as they landed on Grand Designs with a huge bill.
Viewers watched as the bad news was announced to homeowners Ian and Jenny, while an expert examined a rotting roof.
Kevin McCloud, the host of the Channel 4 show, is heard commenting that replacing the entire structure could cost “thousands of pounds”.
Kevin also explained that it was simply money “which Ian and Jenny don’t have in their budget”.
When a builder inspected the roof on Wednesday night’s episode, the response was not positive, despite Ian keeping all his fingers crossed.
Surveying the various sections, the worker declared: “There’s rot in the top.”
Continuing to remain optimistic, Ian told the camera: “It would be nice if the ridge was dry and in good condition.”
Off-screen, Kevin explained: “If even the largest beam ridge purlin running to the top is rotten, the entire roof will need to be rebuilt.”
Holding his breath for the specialist’s final assessment, Ian is told: “It doesn’t look good there – everything rots.”
With his last attempt at positivity, he simply replied: “Balls.”
Ian and his wife Jenny had already spent £225,000 to buy a plot of land in the middle of a Scottish country estate, both a Grade II listed one and a walled garden.
Problems along the way saw the couple go over budget by £50,000.
Grand Design airs Wednesdays at 9 pm on Channel 4.
