Representative Michael Waltz: The other thing about the hypersonic missile is that it is the culmination of 20 years of reaching the top through research, through cyber, through mergers and acquisitions. It is incredibly sophisticated. They stole it, and now the chickens are coming to settle in the house.
And in terms of what’s driving it, it’s a flawed view of the world that we’re good enough for our adversaries. We bring them to the negotiating table now, they’ll be good back. We saw how it broke down in Alaska, where we were lectured on American soil by the Chinese Foreign Ministry.
But the second piece is this flawed old thinking that they will eventually change and that, as Jen Psaki just said in response to this first-strike weapon, ‘Well, we welcome competition.’ This is no competition. They want to take our place. And it was a huge step in that direction.
