Google has introduced two new smartphones to compete with the iPhone 13.

The supercharged Google Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro are official – and they’re surprisingly cheap.

Both the phones come with a Google-made chip and the latest Android 12 software.

The Pixel 6 is the cheapest at $599/£599 – $699/£679 cheaper than the iPhone 13 Mini.

And the Pixel 6 Pro costs $899/£849, which also undercuts the $999/£949 iPhone 13 Pro – and the more equivalent iPhone 13 Pro Max ($1,099/£1,049).

The idea is that the Pixel 6 is for everyday buyers, and the Pro model is for those who want more out of their phones – and are willing to pay extra for it.

Google Pixel 6 – $599 / £599

The Google Pixel 6 is this year’s entry-level model with a revamped design.

It has a full-screen 6.4-inch display with Full HD+ 1080 x 2400 pixels.

The 90Hz screen is protected with Corning Gorilla Glass Victus, and is “always on” so you can quickly check the time.

You get 24 hours of battery life, which increases to 48 hours with the Extreme Battery Saver mode.

And gives you 30% power fast-charge in 30 minutes.

Powering the device is a custom-built Google Tensor chip – a clear rival to Apple’s A-series processors.

You get 8GB RAM and 128GB or 256GB storage options.

At the back is a 50-megapixel wide camera, paired with a 12-megapixel ultra-wide camera.

The front camera is also wide-angle (but not ultra-wide) with an 8-megapixel resolution.

The rear camera can shoot 4K at 60 frames per second.

And there is a fingerprint scanner under the display.

It supports USB-C charging, dual SIM design and 5G speed.

You can get Stormy Black, sorta Seafood and Kinda Coral color options.

Pixel 6 runs on Android 12 with new design and features.

One neat trick is that your entire UI can now be updated to match your wallpaper.

The automatic theme will change colors across the board to fit in with whatever you choose.

Google Pixel 6 Pro – $899 / $£849

The Pixel 6 Pro is very similar to the Pixel 6, but with some important and welcome changes.

For starters, the screen is big at 6.76-inches.

And it’s a 120Hz “sleek” display with a more pixel-dense QHD+ (1440 x 3120) display.

Apart from the Pixel 6 camera, you get a 48-megapixel telephoto lens with 4x optical zoom.

And there is an ultra-wide front camera that is capable of recording 4K videos as well.

The digital zoom on video has been increased from 7x to 20x on the Pro model.

Battery life is almost the same, although you get even faster charging – up to 50% in 30 minutes.

Memory is increased to 12GB (up from 8GB), but storage options remain the same.

And it’s all powered by the same fast Google Tensor chip on the Pixel 6.

In many ways, the phone is similar to the Pixel 6.

The big advantages are bigger and better displays, more powerful cameras, higher memory allowance and faster charging.

For an additional $300/£250, this is more than reasonable for a lot of buyers.

But those who aren’t too bothered will probably be fine with the impressive Pixel 6.
