For most of 2021, Sonny was living as a man named “Mike” in Nixon Falls, Pennsylvania. Sonny lost his memory after falling from a bridge and did not know who his family and friends were in Port Charles. He was able to lead a quiet life away from the careers of the crowd that he had.
However, after being caught in a fire at Nixon Falls, Sonny has visions of his late father, who reveals to him his true identity. Sonny finally realized who he was and headed back to Port Charles.
Upon his return, he learns that his world has changed. His wife, Carly Corinthos (Laura Wright), was married to her right-hand man, Jason Morgan (Steve Burton). Additionally, his business was in serious trouble after rivals decided to move to his territory.

Benard told abc 7 Recently viewers can expect “tense” scenes in the near future. “I just did something today, and I did something yesterday,” he said. “I was stressed, so you’re going to be stressed.”

Earlier this month, while he was still playing “Mike,” Benard revealed soap opera digest, “I really can’t miss playing Sunny. I want to tell you the truth! And the fans are going to hate me and stay on me—but you know, I’m just an honest guy. I’m not going to lie to you. Like three weeks ago, I played both characters and Sonny was just – I don’t know what that was! But I felt like taking a bath after playing it [laughs]”
However, Benard is still excited about Sonny’s upcoming drama.
“In this particular story, I have a level of excitement that I haven’t in a long time,” he told ABC 7. “Sonny Dark. And for me, being mentally ill, it might fall on you after 28 years. But that’s what the audience digs and I have to go there.”
