It was back in December of 2011 when a motorcyclist spotted the partially worn body of Nicole Rose Scott at the end of University Boulevard in the Lakewood Ranch area. Investigators later determined that the 29-year-old woman had been strangled to death and was probably released into a wooded area several days before her body was found.

Neighbors in the apartment complex where Scott once lived in Sarasota told Granthshala 13 at the time that she was nice and quiet.

“You don’t want to see this happen to anyone,” offered one. “Shame.”

They especially felt sorry for his family.

“She came and went and didn’t bother anyone.”

Benjamin Moulton was among the deputy he spoke to during the murder investigation, but he says he denied any involvement and that detectives did not have enough evidence to link him to the crime.

“We knew there might be a connection between him and our victim, Nicole, we weren’t able to put him at the crime scene or make an arrest,” Warren said.

Despite the efforts of detectives, the trail has cooled over the years – by Wednesday.

Deputies say Moulton, now 43, went to the sheriff’s office operations center and told the deputies that he was, in fact, the person who killed Nicole Scott.

MCSO released this image of Moulton coming to turn himself in.

“As he said he had found Jehovah and wanted to put an end to this crime. He told us things that only he would know if he was out there and it turns out he wanted to get it off his chest. Was as he told us because it was time,” Warren said.

In a meeting with murder detectives, Moulton reportedly explained that he killed her in anger and provided other details about the case that were never released to the public. He also told detectives that he has since “found Jehovah and can no longer live with guilt.”

Moulton has now been charged with first-degree murder.

Nearly 10 years after the murder of Nicole Scott, Moulton’s confession closes the case and begins healing for her family.
