An FBI informant was reportedly one of the January 6 rioters, and mobs stormed the US Capitol seeking to obstruct official authentication of Joe Biden’s presidential victory, giving his handlers a real-time update.
NS new York Times reported a member of the far-right Proud Boys militia, one of thousands who participated in the deadly riot, messaging an FBI agent throughout the day.
The informant is identified only as belonging to the Midwest chapter of the group.
According to the report, the informant was unaware at first that the group would attempt to break into the US Capitol, where lawmakers were authenticating the results of the 2020 presidential election.
This suggests that law enforcement were more aware of what was happening on the ground than before.
Records obtained by Times Describe the informant meeting with other Proud Boys on the morning of January 6 by the Washington Monument, where former President Donald Trump spoke at a “Stop the Steel” rally before the violent scene at the Capitol.
The Proud Boys are notorious for inciting fights at the protests, but according to the informant’s version of events, the group was merely “following a pro-Trump mob consumed by a herd mentality”.
Militia members reportedly had a lengthy argument about whether to enter the Capitol, and eventually made their way into the building.
She is told by a police officer that someone has been shot inside, possibly referring to Ashley Babitt. The informant fled through a window.
The informant seems to suggest that there was no conspiracy to attack the Capitol prior to the riots, and the intelligence may have formed part of a House Select Committee investigation into the events of that day.
It appears that the informer was a foot soldier of the group and not one of its leaders.
More than 600 rioters were charged with rioting crimes, 15 of them members of the Proud Boys.
The January 6 committee has requested defendants who have already pleaded guilty to testify before the panel.
